Here's to Your Health

Spokane has one of the largest medical centers in the Northwest and is home to four full-service hospitals, as well as three specialty hospitals.

The service area continues to grow, with over 30 percent of hospital admissions from residents outside Spokane County, creating a market size comparable to Seattle.

Spokane’s hospitals provide quality care ranging from open heart surgery, poison center education, heart/lung transplants, cancer treatment, neonatal care, kidney dialysis, rehabilitation, and home care.

Holy Family, Deaconess, Valley and Sacred Heart hospitals offer the most modern and convenient childbirth facilities available. Neonatal intensive care centers are available at Deaconess and Sacred Heart.

The Sacred Heart Cancer and Research Center, in cooperation with national research groups, is committed to delivering the latest therapy to cancer patients. The National Cancer Institute approved the center in 1990.

Rockwood Clinic is the largest multi-specialty group medical practice in the Inland Northwest, with state-of-the-art facilities staffed by more than 120 physicians. It provides complete primary, specialty and urgent health care services throughout Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

As early as the 1950s, Spokane was recognized for its leadership in heart disease treatment and research. The Heart Institute of Spokane, a non-profit organization, was formed in 1989 for scientific, educational and charitable purposes. The Heart Institute’s mission is to reduce the impact of cardiovascular disease through cardiac care of patients, research, and public and professional education.

The Health Research and Education Center (HREC) at Washington State University Spokane develops clinical and applied research in biomedical and social health areas.

Recently, $25 million was appropriated to establish extensions of the University of Washington School of Medicine and Dentistry in Spokane. In the heart of the University District, the medical school will educate 20 first-year medical students and eight first-year dental students.

Shriners Hospital for Children has been providing no-cost orthopedic care to Inland Northwest families with special needs for over 75 years. Families are encouraged to contact the hospital for further information and assistance.

The Spokane Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is dedicated to providing quality health care services to veterans. Spokane VAMC is a 36-bed general medical and surgical facility with a 38-bed rehabilitation-orientated NHCU that also provides hospice and respite care. A mobile clinic, outfitted with two exam rooms, provides selected primary care services to veterans living in remote areas outside the metropolitan Spokane area.

Spokane Mental Health provides mental health services to assist children, adults and the elderly, and has received national awards and recognition for many of its programs.

The Washington Institute for Mental Illness Research and Training recruits and retrains qualified professionals at state hospitals. Their focus is on clinical care using modern treatments, and working to expand training for and understanding of state hospitals and community services.

Information Resource Management (IRM), a division of Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS), uses an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, providing all participating hospitals and clinics with one standardized clinical data structure and presentation. Its integrated database currently stores over 2.8 million patient records and includes all data associated with hospital inpatient and emergency room visits including physician orders, medication information, laboratory data and radiological images.

Spokane’s excellent medical community provides up-to-date services and care. Urgent care centers are accessible, and 24-hour emergency care is available at hospitals and medical centers in the metropolitan area.

The Spokane Fire Department is an integral part of Spokane’s health care team. The department provides emergency medical response to citizens who fall victim to sudden illness or injury. The department has 14 fire stations strategically located throughout the city. These stations house fire apparatus staffed with firefighter/emergency medical technicians and firefighter/paramedics to respond to any medical emergency.

The Spokane Fire Department contracts with a private paramedic ambulance company (Spokane Ambulance, a division of American Medical Response) to provide patient transport. This close working relationship and contract has helped reduce ambulance response time, and has given citizens some of the lowest rates in Washington State.

The department is actively involved in education and prevention programs to help reduce the incidence of injury and encourage healthy lifestyles to reduce illness in the community.
