Arts and Culture
We’re proud of our more than 80 arts organizations.
They include museums and galleries, a professional symphony orchestra, and one of the country’s only big band jazz orchestras. We’re also a regular stop for touring Broadway shows and major concert tours. Also, check out www.spokanearts.org for an expanded list of arts organizations throughout the region.
International Perspective
Spokane maintains sister city programs with Nishinomiya, Japan; Jilin City, China; Chechon, Korea; and Limerick, Ireland. Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, a school for visiting Japanese students, introduces a touch of Asian culture.
Music
Our premier performing arts organization is the Spokane Symphony, which performs in the Fox Theater – a recently renovated 1,600-seat theater located in the heart of the city. Others include the Spokane Jazz Society, Opera Buffs of Spokane, and Spokane Youth Symphony.
Theater
The Spokane Interplayers Ensemble is our resident professional theater, and the Spokane Civic Theater offers year-round entertainment in its $2 million home. Broadway is represented by the Best of Broadway road show series at the INB Performing Arts Center.
Dance
The Spokane metropolitan area is home to 11 dance groups and associations representing forms ranging from ballet to folk and modern. There are several youth dance groups and a resurgence of interest in ballet.
Museums
The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC) is the centerpiece of our visual arts community. In addition to a world-class collection of Native American artifacts, the museum showcases the region’s rich history, and its gallery hosts revolving exhibits featuring the work of artists of regional, national and international reputation.
Mobius Kids, an Inland Northwest discovery museum providing hands-on learning, creativity and fun for kids up to ten years old, opened in 2005. The 16,000-square-foot facility features exciting exhibits, play areas, programs and events.
Gonzaga University is home to the Jundt Art Center and Museum which provides space for traveling exhibits and the school’s growing art collection.
